Yes you can deschool at anytime. So I would recommend to stop the curriculum you’re working on and do a period of deschooling. That doesn’t stop you from doing interesting learning activities such as the zoo or museums etc. During this period of time, observe your child to determine their learning style. And then decide on a homeschooling method that you think would best suit your son. There are many types of learning styles or homeschooling methods such as Montesorri, unschooling, unit studies, etc. I’ve only written on unschooling so far, but I will be writing articles on other methods in the future.
